With a background in aerospace, medical fields, and consulting, David brings a fresh perspective and innovative approach to the traditionally stodgy and tradition-bound world of wine. Throughout the tasting, Austin and David explore a range of unique white wine blends, each with its own character and charm. David shares his winemaking philosophy, which centers on avoiding producing the same wine over and over again. By utilizing different fermentation techniques, such as skin fermentation, barrel fermentation, and stainless steel, David crafts a spectrum of white wines that challenge the notion of what white wine can be. As the tasting continues, Austin and David discuss the flexibility that comes with not owning vineyards, allowing David to source grapes from various locations and experiment with different varieties and blends each vintage. This approach results in a lineup of wines that can be radically different from year to year, reflecting David's creativity and passion for exploration. A conversation between David Guimaraens and Austin Beeman about Fonseca Bin 27, a young and fruity port wine. Guimaraens describes the wine as full-bodied and rich, with a concentration of black currant fruit. He explains that the grapes used to make the port come from the Douro Valley, which has a hot mountain climate that contributes to the intensity of the fruit. The wine has plenty of tannins, making it a good pairing with chocolate desserts. Beeman comments on the aroma of cherries and raspberries, and Guimaraens attributes this to the grape varieties used in port production. They both agree that the wine is pure, bright, and joyful in its fruitiness. Guimaraens describes Fonseca as a house known for its bubbly, rich, and intense wines, and Bin 27 is no exception. They discuss how the winemaking process is crucial in preserving the fruitiness of the wine while extracting color and structure. Overall, they find the wine to be enjoyable and fun. Rita Marta, a member of the Martha family (https://marthasgroup.com), gives a tour of their old cellars in the Douro Valley. The walls of the main house date back to 1727, although they have been reconstructed over time. The family has been in the grape-growing business since then, but only started making wine in the early 19th century. They initially sold their grapes and later began selling their own bottled wine in 1970. The family primarily focuses on producing Tawny ports, which are traditionally more popular among Portuguese families. They also have French casks from Bordeaux that they use to age their ports and spirits. Visit the Nacional Vineyard of Quinta do Noval with Austin Beeman in Portugal. The Nacional vineyard at Quinta do Noval in Portugal is considered one of the most important vineyards in the world. It survived phylloxera which devastated European vineyards in the late 1800s. The plot is the only survivor of the disease in the Douro Valley, and the reason for its resistance is still unknown. The vineyard is home to a traditional field blend of Portuguese grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Cão, and Souzão. The vineyard is managed organically, and the low quantity of grapes produced results in a rare and valuable wine, with prices reaching beyond 1000 euros per bottle. The Nacional vineyard is considered the treasure of Quinta do Noval. THIS IS EPISODE 94 OF UNDERSTANDING WINE WITH AUSTIN BEEMAN http://www.austinbeeman.com/podcast

The Elena Walch winery in Alto Adige / Sudtirol is iconic and inspirational. Elena’s arrival in 1980s launched a quality transformation that would reset what was possible for this mountainous region that is part Italian and part German. Theo Zierock on the Dolomites, Teroldego, and the Vineyards of Agricola Foradori Episode #84 of Understanding Wine with Austin Beeman Agricola Foradori is located in the Piana Rotaliana, a 700 hectare region in Italy surrounded by the Monte di Mezzocorona, the Grandos, and the Adige Valley. The region is known for its unique soil composition, formed by the accumulation of ice and snow during the last ice age and the subsequent melting of a glacier, which washed sand and various types of mountain stones, including dolomite and porphyry, onto the land. The soil in the region varies in its intensity and thickness, with some areas having a higher density of stones and others having a more sandy substrate. This diversity in soil composition results in distinct characteristics in the wines produced by Agricola Foradori, with those grown in denser soil tending to have more density on the grapes and less fruit, but also denser fruit, and those grown in sandy soil having lighter, crunchier, and juicier wines with less density. The acidity and variety of the grapes also play a role in the aging potential of the wines produced by Agricola Foradori. But just as important, he established the very tone of Oregon winegrowing: artisanal, individualistic, even idiosyncratic… You can look at Oregon’s 300-plus wineries and 17,400 acres of vines and trace it to Lett. But he left more than that. He bequeathed a uniquely Oregon ‘wine genome,’ one that others now seek to copy.” Matt Kramer | The Wine Spectator | The Oregonian --- “Three months after meeting David Lett in 1966, I was Diana Lett, standing out in the middle of a field of grape vines in Oregon, with a shovel and a brand new yellow rain-suit. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but I was thrilled to be in on the opening chapter of a great adventure. It seemed like a long time at the time, but in a few years several other families joined us. As we got to know each other, we realized that we shared ideals. We also realized that we had an absolutely unique opportunity – to build a wine region from scratch, and build it right. 50 years and a thriving community later, it does look like we did it right. I am so proud of what has been accomplished in these five decades, and I am very grateful that I got to be a part of it. I am immensely glad that I have been able to spend my life in this beautiful state of Oregon, helping to build The Eyrie Vineyards.” Diana Lett 2015 --- “In 2005 I came back to Eyrie as winemaker. I was often asked, “What are you going to change?” My answer was, ‘Fundamentally? Nothing.’ Since then, we have planted new vines and introduced new varieties to the Willamette Valley. We moved to wild yeast fermentations. We developed a 21-step process to guarantee the quality of our library releases. We released single vineyard Pinots from each of our estates for the first time in our history. In spite of the changes, nothing has changed. Exploration and innovation has been a part of the Eyrie adventure since Dad planted the first vines in 1965. I’m honored to have a part in carrying the journey forward.” Jason Lett 2016

But a lot of people don't really know wine at all. And there's always been this you have a white with chicken, and fish, and pasta, and then you have reds with meat. He produces six wines from those 21 acres, but first and foremost, Steve Lutz loves his dirt. “It’s a pain to work with,” he says of his steep hillside vineyard called Lenné, “but it controls vigor and produces small clusters and berries.” With Pinot Noir, those are two integral factors to making really good, balanced wine. Steve began making wine for himself in 1986 in Napa Valley which led him on a search 15 years later for the perfect Pinot Noir site in the Northern Willamette Valley. After an eight month search it only took 15 minutes when he climbed a steep hill 1 located outside the town of Yamhill, in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. He made the deal within an hour, planted the vineyard in 2001 and determined, “This is the perfect piece. It wasn’t even officially on the market when I looked at it. I just happened to know a friend of the friend of the land owner. It’s the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me. It’s a gem.” Though he likes to call himself a “minimalist” winemaker, it’s on this ground into which he puts the preponderance of work. “It’s more than a passion, it’s a privilege,” to be working with this soil, he contends. And, “the more work you do on a place, the more interested you are in it. To say, ‘This is what I do every day’, is a great thing to be able to do. I want other people to experience and understand that. This hillside gives my wines a certain aromatic quality and density, which spells terroir to me.” With the 2014 vintage, Lenné’s vines are reaching maturity to which leads Lutz to exclaim, “I’m more enamored with this site now because it’s getting some age; we have a good feel for the clones, and the type of wines they produce.” So in 2005, after he tasted the first wines to come off this stressed vineyard from which he at first wasn’t sure would be viable, and after “just writing checks which was tough on a marriage, I told my wife, ‘Don’t worry about it, everything’s going to work out.’” The Pinot Noir he recollects, tasted like chocolate black cherry; and that mocha-like taste has been a constant thread throughout all of Lenné’s wines since. Winemaker David Bellows discusses the three clones of Pinot Noir grown on the Vidon Vineyard Estate with Austin Beeman. Half-bottles, Restaurants, and the Meaning of Wine. Elizabeth Pressler of Elizabeth Spencer Winery: The Complete Interview
My interview with Elizabeth Pressler of Elizabeth Spencer Winery was a pleasant wine conversation with a pleasant lady who makes very good wine. What really makes this a turning point was that I asked her "What Does Wine Mean to You?" It was a question I had asked of Dirk Richter and would soon become a motif in later interviews as well. Enjoy! Parts of this video were released as separate episodes of Understanding Wine with Austin Beeman and are collected here for the first time.

St. Innocent Winery's Founder and Winemaker Mark Vlossak was responsible for some of the most interesting wines that I tasted during my 2012 trip to Oregon. The St. Innocent Pinot Noir Temperance Hill absolutely blew me away and the St Innocent Pinot Blanc made me think hard about the white wine potential of this region. Mr. Vlossak was also one of the Willamette Valley's most eloquent supporters. Winemaker Mark Vlossak is heavily involved in the yearly "Pinot Camp" educational week for industry professional. This video, the first of five, gives you a taste of what he can teach us about Oregon Wine. I interviewed Mr. Vlossak in the cellars at St. Innocent Winery. In the summer of 2012, I had the opportunity to sit down with Chehalem Winery's Wynne Peterson-Nedry. It was a rare blast of hot weather in Oregon with temperatures rising into the high 90s. It was a pleasure to stay in the shade and sip from the many dry white wines that are strongly featured in Chehalem's porfolio. Chehalem Winery, a family operation, was transitioning from Father to Daughter as well as experiencing a dramatic change in their label design. I spent about a half hour with Ms. Peterson-Nedry and the highlights of that interview form Episode #46 of Understanding Wine with Austin Beeman. We spoke about the history of Chehalem Winery, where Oregon fits among world Pinot Noir regions, and why you should think about Riesling when you think Oregon Wines. |
