Wine ratings and reviews in the style of Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast, and Robert Parker. Visits to Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Bordeaux, France, Burgundy, Italy, Germany, and many many more. In the tradition of Wine Library TV, Grape Radio, and others, this HD wine podcast brings the wine educators and sommeliers to you.

As Karoline Walch and I walked the vineyards, the important concept of sustainability came up.

“My family has been here for five generations and I hope the vineyards go on for the next five generations in the same family hands. So it's obvious that what we do today is really also about thinking of the next generation. What we take out today is something we really have to give back also.” - Karoline Walch of Elena Walch

I hope you enjoy this brief 2 minute video.

Kastelaz has the prestigious additional denomination of VIGNA. It is an additional mention of a smaller geographical origin and designs the smallest historical / geographical unit of a vineyard. Every single Vigna must be officially admitted and registered within the regional government. It expresses the ultimate thought of terroir philosophy with the idea of a parcel wine from an exact plot and hence having a historical or traditional name.

Our next video takes place in one of the Elena Walch unique VIGNA: Kastelaz. This steep and beautiful vineyard overlooking the town of Tramin, which provides a basis for the VIGNA’s grape: Gewürztraminer.

The Elena Walch winery in Alto Adige / Sudtirol is iconic and inspirational. Elena’s arrival in 1980s launched a quality transformation that would reset what was possible for this mountainous region that is part Italian and part German.

Having sold these wines since 2004 - first at Walt Churchill’s Market and now at Cutting Edge Selections - I was incredibly honored to be given a tour of the cellars with Owner/Winemaker Karoline Walch.

I hope you enjoy this eleven minute video.

Of course, wine is made in the vineyard, but as Winemaker Theo Zierock of Agricola Foradori shows us, it also requires interesting work in the cellar.  In the video Zierock discusses the winemaking process, shows fermentation tanks, aging barrels, and a cellar filled with amphora.

Some highlights include

  • The new “dream destemmer”
  • Why there are different variations of Foradori wines under the same label.
  • The role of amphora in the aging process.

Theo Zierock on the Dolomites, Teroldego, and the Vineyards of Agricola Foradori

Episode #84 of Understanding Wine with Austin Beeman

Agricola Foradori is located in the Piana Rotaliana, a 700 hectare region in Italy surrounded by the Monte di Mezzocorona, the Grandos, and the Adige Valley. The region is known for its unique soil composition, formed by the accumulation of ice and snow during the last ice age and the subsequent melting of a glacier, which washed sand and various types of mountain stones, including dolomite and porphyry, onto the land. The soil in the region varies in its intensity and thickness, with some areas having a higher density of stones and others having a more sandy substrate. This diversity in soil composition results in distinct characteristics in the wines produced by Agricola Foradori, with those grown in denser soil tending to have more density on the grapes and less fruit, but also denser fruit, and those grown in sandy soil having lighter, crunchier, and juicier wines with less density. The acidity and variety of the grapes also play a role in the aging potential of the wines produced by Agricola Foradori.

About The Eyrie Vineyards https://eyrievineyards.com

“David Lett pioneered both Pinot noir and its white wine cousin, Pinot gris, the two grapes that define Oregon wine today. But just as important, he established the very tone of Oregon winegrowing: artisanal, individualistic, even idiosyncratic… You can look at Oregon’s 300-plus wineries and 17,400 acres of vines and trace it to Lett. But he left more than that. He bequeathed a uniquely Oregon ‘wine genome,’ one that others now seek to copy.”

Matt Kramer | The Wine Spectator | The Oregonian

“Three months after meeting David Lett in 1966, I was Diana Lett, standing out in the middle of a field of grape vines in Oregon, with a shovel and a brand new yellow rain-suit. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but I was thrilled to be in on the opening chapter of a great adventure. It seemed like a long time at the time, but in a few years several other families joined us. As we got to know each other, we realized that we shared ideals. We also realized that we had an absolutely unique opportunity – to build a wine region from scratch, and build it right. 50 years and a thriving community later, it does look like we did it right. I am so proud of what has been accomplished in these five decades, and I am very grateful that I got to be a part of it. I am immensely glad that I have been able to spend my life in this beautiful state of Oregon, helping to build The Eyrie Vineyards.” Diana Lett 2015

---

“In 2005 I came back to Eyrie as winemaker. I was often asked, “What are you going to change?” My answer was, ‘Fundamentally? Nothing.’ Since then, we have planted new vines and introduced new varieties to the Willamette Valley. We moved to wild yeast fermentations. We developed a 21-step process to guarantee the quality of our library releases. We released single vineyard Pinots from each of our estates for the first time in our history. In spite of the changes, nothing has changed. Exploration and innovation has been a part of the Eyrie adventure since Dad planted the first vines in 1965. I’m honored to have a part in carrying the journey forward.”

"Sean Mooney: Well, and now let's get to the basics, because I grew up and I was a waiter at a place called The Vineyard, and I learned the basics and the different types of wine and I could suggest, and we had wine tastings, it was great. But a lot of people don't really know wine at all. And there's always been this you have a white with chicken, and fish, and pasta, and then you have reds with meat. And does that still stand true or is it whatever your preference is? And is there a reason for that, that they go better?

Austin Beeman: So wine pairing is absolutely a real thing based on chemistry and biology. If you wonder whether or not wine pairing is real, brush your teeth, drink orange juice. The last thing in your mouth matters..."

Walk the Lenné Estate Vineyard with Proprietor Steve Luz.

http://www.austinbeeman.com

https://www.lenneestate.com

Special Thanks to Carl Giavanti

https://carlgiavanticonsulting.com

To hear Steve Lutz tell it, his vineyard sits on the poorest soil imaginable. “The worst in the county,” he boasts with pride and bravado. That’s because the depleted ancient sedimentary soil, outside of Yamhill, OR. he believes, is the best in which to grow Pinot Noir grapes.

He produces six wines from those 21 acres, but first and foremost, Steve Lutz loves his dirt. “It’s a pain to work with,” he says of his steep hillside vineyard called Lenné, “but it controls vigor and produces small clusters and berries.” With Pinot Noir, those are two integral factors to making really good, balanced wine.

Steve began making wine for himself in 1986 in Napa Valley which led him on a search 15 years later for the perfect Pinot Noir site in the Northern Willamette Valley. After an eight month search it only took 15 minutes when he climbed a steep hill 1 located outside the town of Yamhill, in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. He made the deal within an hour, planted the vineyard in 2001 and determined, “This is the perfect piece. It wasn’t even officially on the market when I looked at it. I just happened to know a friend of the friend of the land owner. It’s the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me. It’s a gem.” Though he likes to call himself a “minimalist” winemaker, it’s on this ground into which he puts the preponderance of work. “It’s more than a passion, it’s a privilege,” to be working with this soil, he contends. And, “the more work you do on a place, the more interested you are in it. To say, ‘This is what I do every day’, is a great thing to be able to do. I want other people to experience and understand that. This hillside gives my wines a certain aromatic quality and density, which spells terroir to me.”

With the 2014 vintage, Lenné’s vines are reaching maturity to which leads Lutz to exclaim, “I’m more enamored with this site now because it’s getting some age; we have a good feel for the clones, and the type of wines they produce.”

So in 2005, after he tasted the first wines to come off this stressed vineyard from which he at first wasn’t sure would be viable, and after “just writing checks which was tough on a marriage, I told my wife, ‘Don’t worry about it, everything’s going to work out.’” The Pinot Noir he recollects, tasted like chocolate black cherry; and that mocha-like taste has been a constant thread throughout all of Lenné’s wines since.

Wayne Bailey, Winegrower of Youngberg Hill, discusses five of the wines that he produces at Youngberg Hill in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.

Youngberg Hill Pinot Gris 'Aspen'

Youngberg Hill Chardonnay 'Aspen'

Youngberg Hill Pinot Noir 'Cuvée'

Youngberg Hill Pinot Noir 'Jordan'

Youngberg Hill Pinot Noir 'Natasha'

Youngberg Hill is a 50-acre estate with 20 acres of sustainably farmed vineyards in Willamette Valley. Proprietor Wayne Bailey and his family are the modern-day stewards of a property that has been cherished as a family farm since the 1850s.

Wayne’s holistic and biodynamic viticulture, coupled with non-interventionist winemaking, produce a diverse array of wines with personalities as unique as their namesakes. Wayne prioritizes a non-interventionist approach, gently guiding each wine into the best version of itself that it can be.

He likens his approach to raising children: you don’t make a rocket scientist out of a child with the skills of a music teacher. Wayne was selected as one of “Wine’s Most Inspiring People 2018”, by Wine Industry Network for his community support efforts and noted as “A Pillar of Oregon’s Wine Tourism Industry”.

Winemaker David Bellows discusses the three clones of Pinot Noir grown on the Vidon Vineyard Estate with Austin Beeman.

Owned & operated by Don & Vicki Hagge since 1999, Vidon Vineyard is a LIVE certified sustainable vineyard and winery located in the countryside of Newberg, Oregon. They are situated in the Chehalem Mountains AVA at an elevation between 400 and 500 feet facing south towards the Red Hills of Dundee. Don and Vicki Hagge purchased the land in 1999, planted the vines, harvest the fruit, make the wine  and sell it out of the winery. They believe winemaking begins in the vineyard and are proud of the Oregon wines that this Chehalem Mountains vineyard produces on an annual basis.

Chehalem Winery, a family operation, was transitioning from Father to Daughter as well as experiencing a dramatic change in their label design.  I spent about a half hour with Ms. Peterson-Nedry and the highlights of that interview form Episode #46 of Understanding Wine with Austin Beeman.
